I believe next gen mmo should include:

-dinamic enviroment changes (day, night, seasons)
-living cities (capturable, occupiable stations, moving vendors between cities, etc)
-evolving cratures (patrolling, lvling, changing % of them on areas, depending on killing each other or breeding)
-ability based syste (non-gear dependent character strenght, i.e.: gear cannot make up more than 30% of the strenght and abilities on highest level, so the character is a hero, withouth any _extra special_ gear)
-dinamic quests (quest objective could change location, quest item "target (where you loot the item from) generated quest by quest), enviromental changing quest i.e: assaulting a patrol and taking over the control of a territory for your faction and new patrol starts from your faction, then the enemy faction could do the same quest and vice versa
-max player lvl cap static (cant raise lvls of the players all the time, it ensures the game dieing on low, mid, semi mid levels). Only new content could come in quests, dungeons, special items
-Special ability based gear. I.E. no + base abilities only make stronger the skills and spells in the class' repertoire. Or the game will be a geargrind and you end up having 15% character "strenght" and 85% gear strenght... Ergo at the end you got gear>skill game as all the mmos out there. Just let the armors give extra defense, add extras to ice spells, etc but dont raise the player stats or the whole system is doomed to die out with new content patches IF the system -cannot push it more- gear dependant.

and a lot of more things, that would ensure that you bring all the WoW players to your side.

I'm done with WoW and all mmos after 5years of play. No more boring grinding and badge grinding and gear grinding for me. Such games are not fun on the long run, even if you add new content to it, you ensure that the game slowly dies since no new players=lower lvl areas dieing.

If the game gives the feeling that "Ive been here thousand times but I see something new every day" on an area... Thats the winner game for eternity in my eyes and I would play until I die.
